- “Money and Relationship: Oil and Water or Milk and Honey?”
- With: Lynn Wenzel and Bob Finke, CFP(r)
It's not romantic. It's not the stuff of which Hollywood movies are made. Talking about money is a bigger societal taboo than talking about politics or sex. But when you find yourself approaching a serious, committed relationship, talking about money - before you "tie the knot" - is critically important.
In this discussion you will learn:
- How to discover your own financial roots and those of your partner
- How and when to approach the subject of money in a relationship with confidence, grace and ease.
- How to create a healthy financial profile in a committed partnership.

Review of this program:
At this Friday Speaker Series, LynnWenzel from Center For Financial Affairs presented her workshop entitled "Money and Relationship: Oil and Water or Milk and Honey".
This workshop addressed the underlying issue that prevents us from comfortably talking to our significant other about personal finances - financial illiteracy. Lynn explained why financial illiteracy is ever present in our culture and outlined steps that could be taken to become more financially literate.
Lynn offered two recommendations to assist with becoming more financial literate and hence gaining confidence and peace of mind relative to personal finance.
- Assess your current financial situation and put in the necessary fix to ensure that your finances are in order and supportive of your values and goals. It's much easier to talk about your finances with someone when you are managing them well. She provided several tools to assist with this process.
- Assess your financial roots to gain understanding of your financial behaviors and to put in the necessary adjustments to ensure that you are being supportive of your values and goals. Once you identify your financial behaviors, it is then possible to take charge and make desired changes. She provided a useful tool to assist with this process as well.
Finally, Lynn talked about how the idea of not discussing finances with your significant other is not an option and that it will inevitably happen at some point during the relationship. Therefore, in support of having a successful relationship relative to the area of finances, she suggested initiating discussion prior to forming a legal partnership. She provided several tools to help find common ground in which to begin these discussions and to assist with ongoing financial discussions and the development of a strategic plan.
