Review of this program:

On Friday, June 10, Susan Bernstein, MBA MA from Work from Within (http://www.workfromwithin.com) shared information and got us up on our feet to discover our own inner sensations and the distinctive information our individual bodies provide about relationships.

We learned that we all have our own unique body wisdom patterns - the signals we get from our body that in-form us - literally give us our form in the world. And, in relationships, body wisdom is important because relationships are not just about connecting with our minds. If they were, then every time we read a profile online, for example, that met our criteria, we'd be in the perfect relationship, right off the bat.

Susan told us about research on the role of the heart and the gut, and helped us to understand that we can trust these resources in our lives. We practiced ways to notice ourselves, others, and ourselves in relationships.

The key themes for the evening were:

  1. Energy: Essentially, energy is feeling and sensation, and is part of everything. Energy is vitality and intensity of expression. Postures have energy. Facial expressions have energy. Eye gaze has energy. Breath has energy. How our stomach feels, that's an energetic feeling.

How our throat, shoulders, jaw, or any part of our feels - that's energy. Even motions are like energy in motion - they have sensations attached to them.

So, to become aware of our energy, either with ourselves or with others in relationship, we can notice many things, but in particular, Susan recommends we notice our: breathing, tensions, temperature (ie, heat/cold), and our connection with the ground - feeling the support.

Then, through a series of guided experiences, Susan introduced us to the energy of three other elements we can notice in relationships, and we discovered our preferences and how they varied from others' preferences:
  2. Pacing: How fast are slow do we go? How about our partners? It's all relative. We can be aware of when we're 'in synch' vs. 'you're ahead of me' or 'you can't keep up with me.'
  3. Spacing: Spacing refers to how far apart we are in relationship - both literally and metaphorically.
  4. Facing: Facing refers to where are you directing your energy - in relationship. Are you more open or closed? How open or closed? To what degree?

We practiced having our partners reflect back what they noticed about our energy, posture, gestures, eye gaze, breathing, and any other body information that communicated about our energy. We discovered that it helped us to know each other with more intimacy - it gave us a chance to practice 'into-me-see'.
